Scarlett Johansson has come a long way from her childhood home in Greenwich, New York. Click or scroll on and let's retrace Scarlett's road to fame and step inside the amazing houses she's picked up along the way...
Having spent time living in California and her home city of New York as well as investing in a whole host of properties, Scarlett Johansson has accumulated an incredible collection of amazing real estate. Today, she owns homes in Los Feliz and The Hamptons as well as most recently secretly buying a new home with her husband Colin Jost. However, she wasn't born into such palatial property...
Born in New York City on 22nd November 1984, just three minutes before her twin, Hunter, Scarlett Johansson comes from a humble background. Growing up in Greenwich Village, she spent her early years living in a housing development. Creativity is in her genes; her mother worked as a producer and her grandfather was a screenwriter, so film has been in Scarlett's blood from a young age.
Scarlett attended an elementary school in Greenwich Village, but with ambitions of starring on the big screen, her ordinary childhood was soon thrust into the spotlight. Aged just seven years old she started auditioning for roles and enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute for Kids. She booked her first two auditions, a KitchenAid commercial and the part of Laura Nelson, in 1994 film, North.
After more childhood roles, including her first leading role in the 1996 blockbuster Manny & Lo at age 18, Scarlett began studying at the Professional Children's School in New York. After graduating she then applied to NYU's famous Tisch School of the Arts but was rejected, however, it didn't dissuade her from pursuing a career in film.
Her big break came in 2003 when she played Charlotte opposite actor Bill Murray in the romantic comedy-drama Lost in Translation. That same year she also starred in Girl with a Pearl Earring, with both of these roles establishing her as the sought-after star she is today. From there Scarlett's career sky-rocketed as she entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2010, first playing Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2 opposite Robert Downey Jr.
Back in 2003 before Marvel and the Black Widow, Scarlett snapped up her first apartment in the coveted Hollywood Versailles residential block for $372,000. The ideal spot for a budding actress who was looking to secure more film roles, it gave Scarlett a base for auditions and jobs, away from her native New York. It turned out to be the first acquisition in what would go on to become a huge property portfolio.
Although contemporary images of the star's apartment are scarce, reports suggest it boasted dramatic views of downtown Hollywood and featured just one bedroom and two bathrooms. Spread over 1,150 feet, the spread had hardwood floors, marble countertops in the kitchen and stone and wood-paneled walls.
ScarJo held onto the apartment for 10 years after moving on to bigger and better things, but in 2013 she sold it for $470,000, making her a neat $100,000 profit. At this time in January 2013, she also went back to her stage roots and starred in a Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
In May 2007, it seemed Scarlett was looking for a step up from apartment living and she snapped up a home in the Outpost Estates area of Los Angeles, in Los Feliz. Bought for $7 million, the property was built in 1931 and sits securely behind gates. Bought around the time she started a relationship with fellow actor, Ryan Reynolds, it would have made the perfect love nest.
While living there Scarlett undertook some renovations to give the home a celebrity glow-up, including adding new windows and doors and solar electricity. Going inside the home, the front door leads to various living spaces that open out through archways into a spacious sunroom area with a glass ceiling and tiled floor.
Spread over 4,300 square feet, the stylish home boasts four bedrooms and six bathrooms on the upper floor, whilst downstairs, the chef's kitchen is charming with colorful, country-style blue cabinets and retro appliances. A small breakfast bar sits on one side, whilst on the other, there's ample countertop space for cooking up a storm.
This gorgeous living space is one of the cozier spots in the house and boasts a modern fireplace, beamed ceilings and wooden floors. Elsewhere the home has a media room, gym and a basement area, that could easily be turned into extra living space.
Outside, the multi-level backyard features everything an A-list star could need, with a slim lap pool and spa overlooking tranquil hillside views. In 2010, Scarlett listed the home for just shy of $5 million, and sold just four months later in June for exactly $4 million, meaning she lost $3 million on the deal.
In January 2006, the star reportedly set her sights back on her hometown of New York and snapped up an apartment in The Textile Building in Tribeca for just shy of $2 million. However, the actor was soon looking for something bigger and sold the home in 2008 for $52,000 less than she originally paid for it. Around the same time she was selling, she scooped up some new digs in the Sutton Place neighborhood of Manhattan.
Bought for $2.1 million, the star spent time renovating her swanky penthouse, which is spread over 1,300 square feet with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The open-plan living and dining room, which looks out over the city streets below features floor-to-ceiling windows that lead out to the terrace.
The kitchen, although small, has everything Scarlett would have needed including a farmhouse sink, marble countertops and floors, and state-of-the-art appliances. The apartment would have been the perfect base for Johansson as in May 2008 she decided to branch out into the music industry and released her debut album, Where I Lay My Head.
One of two, the master bedroom is the perfect private retreat with a huge celebrity-worthy walk-in closet and two smaller spaces that are perfect for extra storage. Sliding glass doors open out onto the home's most unusual feature; a 65-square-foot solarium, which can also be accessed by the main terrace.
With skyline views, the 500-square-foot terrace is the ideal outside spot. Bought shortly before she married her first husband Ryan Reynolds in September 2008, Scarlett held on to the property for more than a decade before putting the home on the market in July 2020 for $2.3 million, after initially offering it up for rent at $7,100 a month. She finally sold it in March 2022 at a major loss, for just shy of $1.9 million.
Back in August 2010, the star was once again on the hunt for a bigger home in Los Angeles. Scarlett and Ryan Reynolds bought the famed Wong House for $2.9 million. Located in the upmarket area of Los Feliz, the home was built in 1969 by legendary architects Buff and Hensman.
The Hollywood couple were reported to have done significant work to the home including installing solar panels and also creating plans for a second story that was never built. The main living space is stylish and sleek with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the breathtaking views.
With three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, the master suite features an ensuite bathroom with dual sinks and an outdoor bathtub on its very own private patio. While they may have created the perfect love nest, Johansson and Reynolds announced their divorce in December 2010.
However understated, the architectural masterpiece doesn't go without some colorful touches. The games room looks out over the backyard and is adorned with bright artwork and wood-paneled walls, which can be seen throughout the rest of the house.
The private outside area is perfect for entertaining with a firepit and plenty of patio space. After announcing their divorce, Scarlett and Ryan had to part ways with their mid-century marvel and sold in May 2012 for $3.5 million.
In October 2013, Scarlett quietly bought a home in the upmarket coastal enclave for A-list New Yorkers, The Hamptons. Located in the town of Amagansett, the star paid $2.2 million for the luxury spread. Even though listing photos are scarce, reports suggest that the two-story home has four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms.
Custom-built in 1999, Scarlett can enjoy 3,500 square feet of interior space, whilst outside features a heated pool that's accessed by sliding glass doors and surrounded by private decking. There's also private ocean access and the property includes an unknown area of the Peconic Land Trust.
In December 2014, four months after she gave birth to her first child, Rose, and just two months after she married Romain Dauriac in a secret ceremony in Montana, Scarlett turned her attention back to Los Angeles and bought this Los Feliz home for $3.9 million.
After living in her second husband's native country of France for a short while, the actress decided to set up home in the newly refurbished property back in LA. Full of cozy spaces and comfortable living rooms, the interior boasts dark hardwood floors and includes a step-down reception room, media room and kitchen.
The all-white kitchen sits at the back of the house and boasts a center kitchen island and marble countertops. Sitting next to a small office zone, an attached laundry room and also a sizeable dining area, it's a great space for entertaining.
Upstairs, there are four bedrooms and five bathrooms. The luxurious master suite doesn't scrimp on luxury and features a fireplace and a bathroom with a skylight, plus a walk-out balcony complete with stunning views.
For sunny Californian days, the backyard has a narrow veranda, which is perfect for finding shade from the hot sun. There is a huge swimming pool, an eight-person spa and a games cabana. In 2016 Scarlett announced her separation from Romain, and the couple went on to divorce in September 2017.
In 2018, Scarlett was named the world's highest-paid actress by Forbes. The star celebrated by snapping up a home in the secluded and exclusive area of Sneden's Landing in New York for a reported $4 million.
Hidden behind trees and sitting on just under one acre of land, the property, known as Ivy House, was built in 1953 by Eric Gugler, who became known for his expansion of the West Wing of the White House. The quaint home is the perfect getaway spot for Scarlett and her family.
The living spaces are made up of a reception room that features panoramic views over the Hudson River, two dining spaces, a small den with a fireplace, and a traditional-style kitchen. With cherry wood cabinets, a center island with seating and beige countertops, the kitchen has a less glamorous feel than some of the star's previous setups.
On the upper floor, the four bedrooms and four bathrooms sit alongside romantic wrought-iron balconies and ornate fireplaces. Decorated with floral touches, it's a traditional country home.
The picturesque grounds are completed with a swimming pool, rolling lawns, a tennis court and a cabana. There's also a two-car garage and a four-car carriage house near the driveway. Scarlett and her husband, Colin Jost, who married in 2020, had their first baby together in August 2021 and reportedly moved into a new home. From a humble start in New York to a sprawling Los Angeles pad and her lavish Hamptons home, we can't wait to get a sneak peek inside this new abode!
