Originally known as Stamp House, the 11,398-square-foot residence was built for stamp dealer Rob Perry – a playful nod to his profession is seen through the punctured indents that adorn the home's concrete façade.
The residence's futuristic form is nothing short of showstopping. Private wings housing the property's six bedrooms cantilever off from the communal living spaces, hovering effortlessly over the water.
This seemingly gravity-defying design was inspired by more than just aesthetics. Sited in a region known for its devastating tropical cyclones, the structure's cantilevers help to minimise the impact of flooding. The protruding volumes are tough enough to withstand powerful winds, while preventing water from breaching the property.
Open to the great outdoors, the main social hub of the home is situated at the centre of the structure, around an angular swimming pool. The kitchen, lounge and entertaining zones are framed by a dramatic, geometric ceiling of bisecting concrete beams.
In recent years, the property has been rebranded as the Alkira Resort House – Alkira being an indigenous word meaning bright and sunny – and it's not hard to see why. A tranquil retreat shrouded in breathtaking tropical surroundings, the residence occupies a unique position where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet – the Daintree Forest and the Great Barrier Reef.

Dubbed 'The Star Wars Home', this unusual dome-shaped property on Sullivan's Island in South Carolina is something of a local landmark.
Designed by architect and builder George Paul, its origins aren't quite as lighthearted as its moniker. The plot, which overlooks the beachfront and the North Atlantic Ocean, was previously the site of his parents' house. Sadly, the property was destroyed in 1989, when it found itself in the eye of Hurricane Hugo.

This marvellous white dome home in California was built in 1969 by landscape architect and artist Mary Gordon. Nestled within a verdant walled garden, the unique property was intended as an art studio and its creative origins are still clear to see.
When it came to the home's architecture, Mary wanted to channel the free-flowing lines and organic shapes commonly found in nature.
Only 700 square feet, the property is constructed from concrete reinforced with rebar and clad in plaster. Far more solid than its intricate design appears, the home withstood the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
After buying the house for £451,000 ($560k) in 2013 from the Gordon family, the home's subsequent owner Cynthia Williams renovated and refreshed the kitchen, adding double-glazed windows and a luxurious freestanding bathtub to the master bathroom.

Exceptionally rare, Futuro houses were created during the 1970s by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. Today, there are as few as 100 of these spaceship structures in existence.
Originally constructed as one of 12 spaceships in Christchurch, this Futuro house was displayed at the 1974 Commonwealth Games before being transported to its current location, Warrington, in 1975.

Right off the back of the Star Trek craze of the 60s, King took every step to make this property as extraterrestrial as possible, even adding a retractable staircase.
The home's circular architecture is reflected inside, too, with much of the furniture referencing the round structure.
Built from steel and concrete, the 2,000-square-foot property cost King £201,000 ($250k) to build in 1972.
Sadly, there aren't quite so many people ready to commit to the spaceship life these days, with the house selling for just £105,400 ($130.9k) back in 2008.
Inside, the property's curved interiors are cosy and characterful. Circle motifs reoccur across the furnishings, from the wrought-iron railings to the retro light fittings. While a little dated, the open-plan layout has every amenity for modern living.

While these days, the retractable staircase is no longer functioning, this one-of-a-kind home still offers a unique space-age experience.

The architectural masterpiece sits on 85 acres of luscious land and its luxurious features include a saltwater pool and even an archery range.
The house belonged to De Beers diamond heiress Rebecca Oppenheimer, who bought the site in 2003 and spent three years designing the incredible property.

The second Futuro home on our list, this property is another of Finnish architect Matti Suuronen's rare creations.
Some 50 years after it was first created, artist Craig Barnes discovered the derelict structure in South Africa in 2013, where it had been sitting unloved since 1972. Barnes couldn’t resist purchasing it...
Barnes carefully deconstructed the futuristic unit before transporting it back to the UK. He then spent a year researching, planning and executing its initial restoration.
The refurbished Futuro house was first exhibited at Matt’s Gallery in Mile End, London, before being moved to Central St Martins in King’s Cross and then Le Havre in France.
In 2021, the property was relocated again to Marston Park in Somerset, UK, and is currently used as a unique holiday home.
Inside, the restored Futuro house is every bit the sci-fi spacecraft, with futuristic yellow reclining chairs lining the circular interior. White orb pendant lights complete the UFO design – we imagine any passing aliens would feel pretty at home here.
The interior was designed to be a flexible living space and comes complete with a kitchenette, a dining table and two cosy, curtained-off sleeping cabins with double beds.

With the appearance of a spacecraft that’s just crash-landed on Earth, this incredible holiday home is a sci-fi dream come true.
Though it might look out of this world, the ultra-cool pad can actually be found in Brush Prairie, Washington.
The futuristic lodging spans just 726 square feet and was completed in the 1960s. It's surrounded by five acres of land in the rural Hockinson Hills, allowing residents to enjoy idyllic views from the comfort of the UFO-like retreat.
While the exterior could be plucked straight from 2001: A Space Odyssey, the interior is light, bright and inviting – oh, and just a little bit bonkers!
The surreal structure comes complete with a large, open-plan living area – known as the Lunar Lounge – and a small kitchen.
There are also two futons and two queen airbeds, making the property perfect for up to four people.
