The most expensive celebrity homes ever
Ellen’s new $70m estate is her biggest real estate buy EVER

While Ellen DeGeneres is no stranger to a pricey property purchase or two, the infamous talk show host has outdone herself this time. Rounding off another year of real estate splurges and property flips, Ellen and wife, Portia de Rossi have splashed out on a whopping $70 million (£56.4m) compound in Santa Barbara. Astonishingly, that brings the grand total for their home purchases in 2022 to $170 million (£137m). But how long will they hold onto this ocean-front residence until it's time to re-list? Let’s take a tour of their latest spend before it zips back onto the market…
Ellen and Portia's multi-million oceanfront compound, California

Sitting on 10 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Ellen and Portia’s new homestead can be found in the affluent neighbourhood of Carpinteria. The $70 million (£56.4m) compound comprises of two neighbouring parcels—a Tuscan farmhouse-style manse and a 6.6-acre plot complete with its own small lake and stretching lawns, worth $41.7 million (£33.6m) and $28.2 million (£22.7m) respectively. This celebrity real estate deal is said to be the most expensive in Santa Barbara County history.
A former billionaire's sanctuary

The VIP pair’s California complex also boasts a private pathway named Barranca Path which leads down towards the Carpinteria sand below, perfect for Ellen’s beach-loving guests. While their $70 million (£56.4m) estate seems extensive, the acreage makes up for less than one-half of the original 22-acre compound known as the 'Sanctuary at Loon Point'—parcelled together in 2007 by former hedge fund manager and billionaire Bruce Kovner. The entire property was listed for $160 million (£129m) in 2021.
Exquisite outdoor areas

Worth $550 million between them, DeGeneres and de Rossi’s new Tuscan-style mansion hosts over 9,000 square feet of living space, with five bedrooms and eight baths in total stretching out across three levels with peaceful Pacific views. If they can’t face taking the short stroll down to the seaside, the property flippers can enjoy their own marble mosaic pool, two spas and an outdoor kitchen to boot.
Sprawling, sun-filled interiors

Inside, you’ll find wonderfully high ceilings with exposed wood beams, stone arched walkways and plentiful multi-panelled windows allowing an abundance of Santa Barbara sunlight to filter throughout. The great room features hardwood flooring and a large antique fireplace to gather around and share celebrity gossip. Upstairs, five ensuite bedrooms await including the owners’ suite with a spa-equipped terrace, while a highly desirable wine cellar and home cinema can be found on the lower levels.
Fully-connected grounds

The impressive grounds feature swathes of olive trees, numerous fireside lounge areas, raised herb and vegetable gardens, and even a private beach. Here the real estate gurus can enjoy a firepit, tiki torches and dining area with a reported custom umbrella that's fully wired to phone lines and Wifi—which should come in handy as they tend to their ever-growing property portfolio.

Today, it's worth a whopping $100 million (£80.8m)—the most highly valued asset in Clooney's impressive property portfolio. Located within the idyllic Laglio commune in Italy, the property was initially acquired by the Hollywood A-lister as a holiday home, but is now a regular residence for Clooney and his wife, Amal.

It’s little wonder the Clooneys spend so much time at this property, with its 25 rooms, its copious walk-in closets and its indoor gym and tennis court, with a swimming pool for cooling off afterwards. What’s more, the American actor has been recently appointed an honorary citizen by the municipality. How’s that for love from the community?
