Jim Carrey

Canadian-born actor Jim Carrey has come a long way since working as a janitor in his teenage years to support his family. Hitting the big time in the mid 90s in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber and The Mask, the actor went on to earn a Golden Globe for his performance in The Truman Show, before donning his furry green suit in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Said to be worth around $180 million (£150m), he has his pick of luxury homes, but he's held onto one of them for nearly 30 years. However, change is afoot...

The 61-year-old actor has listed his LA ‘sanctuary’ mansion, which has been his home for the past three decades, for a staggering $28.9 million (£23m). Carrey bought the ranch-style estate in 1994 for $3.8 million (£3.1m) around the time of the release of his first major movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and according to reports, describes the 12,704 square-foot property as “a place of enchantment and inspiration.”

Located in the Brentwood neighbourhood of LA, the five-bedroom, nine-bathroom home sits on two acres of land and includes a gym, a tennis court, a waterfall pool and dedicated yoga platform, according to Janelle Friedman of Sotheby’s International Realty. The listing comes shortly after the actor announced he planned to retire following the release of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 last year, explaining he feels he has “done enough.”

In the main living areas, pitched, beamed ceilings with skylights along with French-styled doors allow natural light to flow through the space. The neutral contemporary interiors are dotted with eye-catching paintings and statues, some of them Carrey’s own work. Elsewhere are mementos from his life in film, including his Riddler costume from Batman Forever in the bar area.

The must-have screening room meanwhile is state-of-the-art, with a perspex box displaying his costume from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Sumptuous armchairs and sofas provide a comfortable setting in which to kick back and enjoy the show. While it is not certain where Carrey will buy next, he reportedly owns a penthouse in Manhattan, which cost him just shy of $13.7 million (£11.2m) but it seems likely he will look for a more calm and isolated spot to pursue his art.

The primary bedroom has its own sitting area, fireplace and pretty balcony overlooking lush greenery and trees in blossom. Reflecting on his time there, Carrey said: “Every night the owls sang me lullabies and every morning I sipped my cup of joe with the hawks and hummingbirds, under a giant grandfather pine.” It sounds like an earthly paradise to us!
Christian Slater

With a big screen career spanning almost four decades, 90s heart-throb Christian Slater has amassed a net worth of a reported $25 million (£20.1m). Raised in New York City, the star went on to live in the sunnier climes of LA and Florida, including investing in a stunning Miami residence.

Slater’s Italian-style abode spans 3,293-square-feet within a gated street close to the waterfront and surrounded by lush vegetation in the Coconut Grove area of Miami. Purchasing the property for $2.2 million (£1.8m) in 2013, the villa had been the main residence of True Romance star and wife, Brittany Lopez ever since. Also known as 'Villa Dolce far Niente', or 'the sweetness of doing nothing', the meticulously renovated home boasts safety windows and a generator to help guard against hurricanes so rife in the Florida area.

Arched doorways throughout add to the Mediterranean feel, leading through from the lush landscaped grounds into the stunning reception areas. Large multi-panelled windows cast streams of Florida sunlight into each room, not least in the spacious and neutrally decorated living area. Also on the first floor, a renovated kitchen, complete with SubZero, Viking, and Miele appliances and a large pantry and breakfast and dining nook areas. Hanging vines and potted plants abound, while palm trees peer in from outside.

The second floor hosts three bedrooms and two full bathrooms alongside the main suite, boasting a large walk-in closet, ensuite marble bathroom with separate shower and soaking tub as well as an entertainment area, according to the listing. The Heathers actor will have also enjoyed poolside views from the suite's rooftop terrace and sunny seating area.

Mahogany doors lead out onto the brick-lined patio and poolside area, flanked by towering palms and mature shrubbery for extra private sunbathing, barbecues and dips in the pool. After nine years of soaking up the sun in one of its outdoor seating areas however, the leading man listed his magnificent abode for nearly $4 million (£3.3m) in 2022, fetching a quarter-of-a-million dollars over the asking price in just three days, according to Realtor. The actor moved on, says Compass realtor Liz Hogan because "his work has him dividing his time between his residences in New York and Los Angeles.”
Julia Roberts

From Pretty Woman and My Best Friend's Wedding to Notting Hill and Stepmom, Julia Roberts starred in some of the biggest movies of the 90s and remains a megastar to this day. Thanks to her decades in the business, the iconic actor is said to be worth in the region of $250 million (£207m) and she's used her wealth to amass an array of gorgeous homes, including a historic townhouse in the heart of San Francisco.

At the beginning of 2020, Roberts snapped up this attractive townhouse in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Presidio Heights, San Francisco. It might look fairly modest from the outside, but it set the star back an eye-watering $8.3 million (£6.8m). Constructed in 1907, the elegant home was designed by architect Sylvain Schnaittacher and remodelled by John Wheatman. However, since her purchase Roberts has undertaken an impressive renovation.

The front door opens to a light-filled hallway, decked out with hardwood floors and leaded windows. The imposing entrance leads through to just over 6,200 square feet of living space, which includes a charming lounge with a central fireplace and built-in shelving, and a formal dining room with panelled walls and a coffered ceiling.

The colourful kitchen is likely one of the home's finest spaces and boasts a warm, country aesthetic thanks to its marble worktops, centre island and rustic green cupboards. Stainless steel appliances, a walk-in pantry and a wine fridge make it the ultimate space for a foodie, while its breakfast nook is the perfect spot for morning coffees.

Upstairs there are five bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms, but the pièce de résistance has to be the master suite. Located on the third floor, it features a dressing area, a celebrity-worthy walk-in closet and a private balcony. Elsewhere, hidden away in the basement, there's a cinema room, wine cellar and office. What's more, thanks to the home's hilltop location, many of the rooms enjoy views of the famous Golden Gate Bridge.
John Travolta

John Travolta has been gracing our screens since the 1970s, starring in such hits as Saturday Night Fever and Grease. Yet the movie star went in a different direction in the 90s, transforming himself into the ultimate mobster with roles in iconic movies Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty. Today, he's said to be worth a staggering $250 million (£211m) and he's used his money to secure an array of stunning residences across America, including a sprawling island retreat in Maine.

In February 2021, Travolta decided to wave goodbye to this traditional island home off the coast of Maine, which had belonged to the legendary actor for some two decades. John and his late wife Kelly Preston, who tragically lost her battle with cancer in July 2020, were newlyweds when they purchased the property back in 1991. The perfect place to escape the hubbub of Hollywood, the VIP holiday home boasts a 10,830-square-foot manor, 48 acres of land, a swimming pool and private beach access.

Built in 1904 by architects Peabody and Stearns, the property was dark and dull when Travolta and Preston moved in, but thanks to an extensive renovation it's now colourful, light and cosy. Before beginning the redesign, the couple browsed magazines for inspiration, before settling on an English country house theme. They spent a few months camping out in a small farmhouse on the estate while they carried out the work.

After their first Christmas in the house, the couple hired esteemed interior designer Christopher Boshears to finish the job. Every room is decked out in linen draperies, damask and velvet upholstery, as well as cottage décor that was partly inspired by the property's coastal setting. The house benefits from plenty of unique architectural details, too, including stone fireplaces, gilded light fixtures, Tudor Revival sash windows and characterful timber trims.

The traditional mansion offers 42 rooms in total, including numerous living rooms for work, rest and play, a large kitchen, a formal dining room, 20 bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The master suite features a wall of windows and comes with an ensuite, walk-in wardrobe, fireplace and, of course, jaw-dropping views. However, after languishing on the market for nearly two years, with an initial price tag of $5 million (£4.1m) it appears the mansion has either finally sold or been removed from the market.
Jodie Foster

After an acclaimed role in Taxi Driver at the age of 12, Jodie Foster went on to become one of the world's most recognisable stars. Taking the lead in movies like The Silence of the Lambs, The Accused and Flightplan, Foster gained herself a $100 million (£84.5m) fortune. In recent years, she's also been behind the camera, taking on the role of producer and director on episodes of TV's Black Mirror and Orange Is the New Black. Let's find out where she lives...

In 2019, Jodie Foster placed this secluded mansion on the market with Christie's International Real Estate at a $15.9 million (£13.1m) asking price. Isolated in the mountains above Coldwater Canyon, Beverly Hills, the property had belonged to the Oscar-winner for seven years. Foster bought the pad back in 2011, for just shy of $11.8 million (£9.5m) and sold it for $14.9 million (£12m) just weeks after putting it on the market. We can see why it was such a quick sale!

The house sits on 0.65 acres of land and is spread over two floors. It was built in the 1950s, but Foster undertook an interior makeover before listing it, resulting in modern spaces that are effortlessly complemented by period touches. Inside, the property offers light-filled and sophisticated living spaces, some with floor-to-ceiling windows, oversized fireplaces, hardwood floors, traditional timber wainscotting and vaulted ceilings.

Of course, the house is filled with luxurious extras, too, including a climate-controlled wine cellar with a tasting room, a high-end fitness centre and a massage room. Unsurprisingly, the glamourous property was listed for a staggering sum when Damon decided to say goodbye in January 2021. Though he originally asked $21 million (£17m), it finally sold for $18 million (£14.8m), making it one of the priciest real estate deals of the year in 2021, according to the LA Times.
Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson has been gracing our screens since the 1970s, but the legendary actor really hit the big time in the 90s, starring in the likes of Pulp Fiction, Die Hard with a Vengeance and Jackie Brown. With his fortune, Samuel L. Jackson has invested in a range of homes, but he's always been drawn to New York City. In 2005, the acting legend put down $4.8 million (£3.9m) for a chic condo inside this historic apartment building, known as The Leonori, on the Upper East Side. Jackson wasn't the first celebrity owner though. In fact, he bought the home from sports star Greg Anthony, according to the New York Post.

Other luxurious touches include the black crystal chandelier and clawfoot soaking tub in the master bathroom, and the huge walk-in closets in the master suite.

In November 2018, Jackson listed the luxurious home for $13 million (£10.7m), which is a pretty sizable profit on his initial investment. The actor now lives in a Tudor-style home in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, California, telling Architectural Digest that he wanted to raise his daughter in a calmer environment.
Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder made a name for herself back in the 80s, after securing roles in two iconic cult movies, Beetlejuice and Heathers. She really came into her stride in the following decade, starring alongside Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands and Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted. Today, she has a net worth in the region of $18 million (£14.8m), as well as a new generation of fans, thanks to her role in the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things. So where does the star live?

Well, Ryder owned this gorgeous property in San Francisco for some 25 years. She purchased the home back in 1995 for a mere $1.3 million (£1.09m), but sold it in December 2020 for just over $4.9 million (£1m), which is a pretty tidy profit! According to the listing, it sold in just nine days.

It isn't difficult to see what drew Ryder to the historic home. Dating back to 1902, the Victorian pad is located atop one of the most coveted blocks in San Francisco, in one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in the city, Cow Hollow. The three-level home offers 3,140 square feet of living space, as well as plenty of gorgeous period touches, such as timber fireplaces, large bay windows and hardwood floors.

She is one of just 16 entertainers who have won the EGOT, which includes an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Academy Award and a Tony Award, making her one of the most decorated actors in history.

Built in the 1930s for Austrian author Vicki Baum, whose novel Grand Hotel earned her international acclaim, this charming historic home belonged to Whoopi Goldberg for almost 25 years. She snapped it up in 1993 for $2.5 million (£2m), before waving goodbye in 2018, selling the luxurious estate with Compass for around $8.8 million (£7.2m). Let's take a closer look...

The interior blends modern design elements with original features, such as black and white checkered floors, crown mouldings and marble fireplaces. The pad even has its very own vintage pub, where Goldberg no doubt hosted plenty of VIP friends over the years. Thanks to the home's elevated position, many of the rooms also provide views of the ocean.

Enclosed by lush landscaping and mature trees, the property also features an outdoor pool, a three-car garage and a separate guest house with its own entrance. The house also comes with 217 feet of frontage along the Palisades Riviera. Interestingly, the house changed hands two times in as many years. After Goldberg sold the Art Deco pad it was back on the market in 2019, with a bumped-up asking price of $9.6 million (£7.9m), despite the new owners doing very little in the way of renovations.
Bruce Willis

Before he hit the big time, Bruce Willis was a TV actor, struggling to make the move into the world of film. But in 1988 he landed the role that would make him, playing John McClane in the high-altitude action movie, Die Hard. Since then he's gained a reputation for being the ultimate action hero and his biggest 90s movies include the likes of Armageddon, Pulp Fiction and The Sixth Sense. His flicks have grossed nearly $5.3 billion (£4.3bn), while the star's fortune is estimated at $250 million (£207m).

So, is it any wonder that Willis has used his fortune to snap up some seriously gorgeous homes? None makes us more envious than this stunning property in Parrot Cay, on the Caribbean archipelago of Turks and Caicos. The pristine island paradise not only benefits from a sprawling lot, a dazzling interior and plenty of VIP amenities, but a secluded location along a picture-perfect private beach, too. The estate is formed from three separate homes totalling 36,000 square feet, with 12 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms in all. It was built in 2004, but underwent a full overhaul in 2020. Step inside the main house and you'll find a gorgeous modern interior with a calming colour palette of blues, whites and warm wood tones, a nod to the landscape outside. The remote celebrity home also boasts more than seven acres of land, which encompasses four swimming pools, 17,000 square feet of outdoor deck, sunbathing patios and private beach access. The couple, along with their two daughters Mabel and Evelyn, still have a place to lay their heads however. The pair bought their current home in Brentwood Park, LA for $9.8 million (£7.9m) in 2019 and Emma occasionally gives us glimpses inside on her Instagram, like this picture of the happy family outside their front door on Christmas Day 2020.

The 13,048-square-foot property, which overlooks Sunset Boulevard, has seven bedrooms and a light and sunny contemporary aesthetic, dotted with artworks by the couple’s two girls seen here. The couple previously sold their Manhattan penthouse for almost $18 million (£15m) and listed their New York State estate for just shy of $13 million (£11m) in January 2019. They could be looking to slim their portfolio as Bruce retired from acting in March 2022, announcing he had been diagnosed with the degenerative condition aphasia, which impacts cognitive abilities. We hope he's finding time to relax with his beautiful family.
