Colin and Marta owned the airfield and operated a microlight flying school from it. The pair found themselves working long hours during the summer months, often finishing at 10pm, before having to drive for 45 minutes to their home in Glasgow.

So, they decided to make their commute much shorter by building a house on the airfield itself. The pair sold their home and an old flat in Edinburgh to fund the project and hired the team at Richard Murphy Architects to help them design the perfect place.

Richard Murphy’s design was inspired by local agricultural and airfield buildings, as well as the work of Australian architect Glenn Murcutt, who was known for designing innovative, climate-sensitive homes, often with striking metal elements.
