According to ITV, the estate dates back to the 13th century and belonged to Sir John Trehane, who was a soldier during the Spanish Armada invasion. In 1700, the then-owner, John Williams, built the newer house for his family, a project that took three years to complete. The estate passed through the Williams family until 1861, when it was bought by Captain William Stackhouse Church Pinwill.
