From 1920 to 2020: This untouched house shows life 100 years ago
Tour a historic home frozen in time

Deep in the heart of the Catskill Mountains in New York state lies a house virtually untouched by the developments and innovations of the past century. A perfect 1920s time warp, the property stands frozen in time, retaining all of its original features and furniture from 100 years ago. Join us as we open a window to the past and explore the secrets of this mysterious home...
Life during a pandemic

An enigmatic approach

Social distancing is not by any means a new concept; barely visible from the main road, a gravelled driveway leads visitors into what appears at first glance to be dense woodland. Venture a little further and a white clapboard house emerges from within the trees, fringed by leafy boughs and dappled with sunlight. A low stone wall marks the boundary of the 175-acre estate and the entrance to this incredible time capsule home, which would have been perfect for self-isolating.
Shrouded in intrigue

The path has long since been covered by a carpet of mossy grass, but the grandeur of the Victorian architecture hints at the property’s elusive past. A veranda runs the length of the front of the house, the carved wooden balustrades lending it a fairy tale-like quality. Even up close, the three-storey house is partially concealed by trees and shrubs, only adding to the air of mystery.
A regal welcome

Inside, the house is a treasure trove of antique furniture and vintage curiosities. Every aspect of the grand living room reveals some new point of interest; a wooden duck perched high on the picture rail or a china teapot nestled beside aged leather tomes. From the carved secretary desk to the flamboyant brocade sofa, each item offers a glimpse of bygone days.
A room with a view

At one end of the lounge, a large sash window looks out over the verdant lawn. Two angled accent chairs with carved cabriole legs allude to lazy afternoons spent sipping tea and conversing with friends. Partially opened drawers offer to spill their secrets, while a mysterious urn sits conspicuously to the right of the reading nook.
Cosy and characterful

Intricate panelling

Talk about time warp interiors. One of the most show-stopping features of the living room is this ornate curved wall. Clad in wooden panels engraved with intricate floral motifs, it's stained in a rich walnut hue that creates the perfect backdrop for the previous owner's collection of antique plates. Above, exquisite mouldings encircle the upper wall and ceiling, demonstrating the best of 1900s craftsmanship.
Period patterns

In contrast to the dark wooden grandeur of the living room, the kitchen has a fresh and airy feel. Light floods in through the sash window, illuminating the chequered blue-and-white floor and chintzy magnolia wow-factor wallpaper. Matching china mugs hang above the cooker while a collection of oven mitts adorn the wall by the cupboard.
Domestic touches

The stately dining room

Delicate details

Above the dining table, a striking chandelier hangs from an ornate ceiling rose. Made from iron with an aged bronze finish, it features a wreath of carved fruits and four lampholders designed to resemble acorn cups. A product of the movement, these stylish lights were incredibly popular in the early 20th century.
Stunning stained glass

Perfectly preserved bedroom

Upstairs, the property boasts four spacious bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Each one is a faithful homage to the 1920s with the original décor and furniture all beautifully preserved. Note the tasselled floral quilts covering the twin beds and the matching Wedgwood-style cameos in this light-filled guest bedroom.
Vintage luxury

The bathrooms too are frozen in time with mosaic tile floors and black-and-white marble walls. The ribcage shower with its clawfoot tray and burnished silver finish would have been the height of sophistication back in the day. A large roll-top tub with ceramic lever taps and a vintage bath rack adds the finishing touch to the lavish space.
Exquisite lighting

Throughout the home, elegant design details and personal touches hint at the building’s history. From framed black-and-white photographs to secret drawers overflowing with yellowed documents, every item is another piece of the puzzle. We wonder who picked out this gorgeous orb chandelier with its leaded floral design and beribboned ceiling frieze?
Grand landscaped grounds

Expansive outbuildings

As an added bonus, the country estate comprises an array of additional outbuildings. While the gorgeous original four-bedroom main house is undoubtedly the star attraction, there is also a three-car garage with a loft space ripe for conversion, plus a cosy guest cottage.
Charming old schoolhouse

If that wasn't enough, the property also includes this charming shingle-clad schoolhouse that's been transformed into a family home. A potential rental that could offer a healthy stream of income, there's scope to convert the other outbuildings into post-pandemic holiday homes or long-term lets too. With only minor restoration work required across the structures, this historic lot is a real gem.
A bird's-eye view

A new beginning

With its fairy tale setting and gorgeous time capsule interior, this house offers a real slice of American history. While the original occupants live on through the perfectly preserved décor, it’s time for a new family to continue their legacy, as the property reportedly sold in 2019 for £1.2 million ($1.5m).
