For pretty streets, weeping willows and close proximity to the River Thames, Marlow is the town for you...

Without a doubt one of the most appealing spots on the river, Marlow is surrounded by meadows and fringed by woodland. Around 30 miles from London and comfortably nestled between Henley and Windsor, it has much to offer potential residents that are sick of the Big Smoke and looking for somewhere a little more scenic to spend their days.

On the high street you’ll find an excellent variety of cafes, hairdressers, Italian restaurants and independents, plus children’s parks and playgrounds. Options to eat out are in rich supply here but Tom Kerridge’s pub The Hand & Flowers has two Michelin stars and is widely regarded as the go-to place. With one Michelin star to its name, gastropub The Coach is a close second serving up a superb gourmet experience on your doorstep.

In terms of activities there’s plenty to amuse everyone in Marlow, from rowing at the local club, to golf at Temple & Harleyford or perhaps walking, cycling and horse riding in the nearby valley. If you’re looking for sports clubs, you’ll be spoiled for choice with everything from tennis and hockey to cricket and bowls taken very seriously in these parts. There’s even a statue in the town of Sir Steve Redgrave, the most successful male rower in Olympic history, who hails from the area.

Homes around here don’t come cheap, with the average setting you back a steep £738,222. Plus, if you can snag a mooring on the river then hold on to it, those things are like gold dust!

Here are some of our favourite properties for sale in the area…

One-bedroom flat, Crown Place, £299,950

If you’re keen for a place to call your own, then this one-bed flat on the ground floor of Crown Place could be for you. The property sits within a gated development with entry phone access so you’ll feel perfectly secure in your own home.

Inside you can fully appreciate that the flat has been recently redecorated and accommodation looks modern and fresh. The main living space is open-plan and leads to the fully fitted kitchen with walk-in storage cupboard and hot water cylinder. From here glazed doors open to a sweet enclosed courtyard, just the right size for keeping a small herb garden or some potted plants.

We can imagine throwing the doors open in the summer months to really ventilate the flat. Just mere moments from Marlow’s high street this is a great opportunity to get a foot on the ladder in a popular, affluent area.

Two-bedroom house, The Lakes, Harleyford, Henley Road, £425,000

Our hearts are pumping for this stunning lakeside lodge on the private Harleyford Estate. The home not only boasts a tranquil setting, beautiful views and ample parking but also access to the Thames path and many scenic walks through the Chiltern countryside.

Keen golfers will happily note that the estate is also home to an 18-hole members golf club, while everyone else will surely be very impressed by the charming riverboat bar/restaurant and the award-winning marina. Inside the lodge the open-plan vaulted reception room immediately commands your attention, with stylish décor, a modern wood burner and floor-to-ceiling windows that soak the home with sunshine and afford far-reaching country views.

We’re also big fans of the veranda that stretches around the property and provides ample space for entertaining, while still retaining absolute privacy. Also on this level is a fully fitted kitchen, as well as an area beneath the stairs that might easily be used as study.

Both bedrooms overlook the lake, while the master has an ensuite bathroom. A shower room is also up here, as well as access to a balcony. We can hardly imagine a more delightful spot to call home!

Three-bedroom cottage, Bisham Village, Marlow Road, £625,000

Bisham village, just south of Marlow, is full of beautiful woodlands and public footpaths – try climbing the steep ridge towards Cookham Dean. It’s also home to this sweet little cottage that’s packed with character and comes with a rather interesting history. Back in the 1600s the dining room was used as the village prison! Today it boasts a neutral décor with cream carpet, an original stained glass window – and absolutely no petty criminals…

Oak ceiling beams and a wood burner are to be found in the living room, making it a wonderfully cosy and traditional place to unwind. Elsewhere is the modern kitchen which has sufficient room for a dining table, while adjacent there is a WC and utility room. From here an original stable door leads out to the garden, where several pretty trees and bushes offer a shady spot to sit and enjoy a summer’s afternoon. Up on the first floor are two large doubles and one single bedroom, all of which are served by a family bathroom. The master boasts built-in wardrobes and a particularly lovely open fireplace.
