Fixer-upper country house for sale for only £50k

Nestled in the Irish countryside, you can snap up this rural home for a bargain – though it’s not for the faint-hearted

Found in County Mayo in the west of Ireland, this detached three-bedroom house is the latest real estate steal to catch our eye.

However, what lies behind its historic facade requires more than a little bit of work. In the listing, estate agent Sherry FitzGerald says the house is in “need of complete renovation” and it’s no understatement.

Yet the property, which is located just 1km from the historic town of Ballyhaunis, comes with a sizeable plot and plenty of potential if you can see past the derelict interior.

Inside, it's clear that the house isn't in a habitable condition right now. Crumbling plaster litters the living room floor, which could suggest a serious damp problem, however, period features such as the fireplace show promise.

Similarly, the once sunny yellow bathroom has been gutted, leaving pipework exposed and the original tiling barely hanging to the walls.

In one of the upstairs bedrooms, a window has fallen through, exposing the interior to the elements, while torn baby pink curtains make for an eerie sight.

On the plus side, the accommodation is spacious and the plot comes with a driveway, outbuildings and lush green surroundings, though it's worth bearing in mind that the property is accessed via a gateway that crosses an active railway line.

Nevertheless, the property, which comprises a kitchen, living room, bathroom and three bedrooms, still offers a lot for a tiny price tag.

The nearest town, Ballyhaunis, is pretty and historic, offering plenty of shops and restaurants, as well as schools and transport connections – it's on the train line that connects Dublin to Westport and Ballina.

Fancy taking a chance on this promising fixer-upper? It's on the market with Sherry FitzGerald for €59,000 (£50k), though we'd recommend a full structural survey before you sign on the dotted line.
